Along the northeast coast is the lighthouse and wildlife refuge at Kilauea Point. The lighthouse was built in 1913 and is situated on a peninsula 200 feet above the ocean. Several varieties of seabirds nest among the cliffs and the small island just off the coast. Unfortunately, we never saw any whales while in Hawaii since they spend the summer months farther north.
